Description:
When a child is not progressing as you would expect, do you consider whether there is a hidden vision problem? Eyesight that is 20/20 does not mean perfect vision. New Whole Brain Strategies Including Brain Gym
Description:
Dr. Martha Burns, renowned clinician and expert, will present comprehensive, whole-brain clinical strategies for pediatric and adult rehabilitation based on new advances in neuroscience and plasticity. Interdependent sensory, motor, and cognitive processing networks, as currently understood based on new imaging capability, will be discussed. The course will emphasize ways in which the occupational therapist, the physical therapist, and the speech pathologist can team efforts to achieve maximal outcomes in sensory processing, executive function, and movement. Specific approaches, such as auditory processing intervention, sensory integration, forced-use therapy, as well as new technological interventions, will be applied within an interdisciplinary framework. The instructor will present effective clinical and technological approaches for the following diagnoses: autism spectrum disorder, stroke, traumatic brain injury, neglect, executive function disorders, apraxia, and motor impairments.

Improving Function in Pediatrics using the Therapy Ball
Description:
Participants will learn methods for integrating the latest techniques in Neuro-Developmental Treatment into treatment sessions through use of the therapy ball. This three-day laboratory experience focuses on the use of gymnastic balls in therapy to promote development and functional outcomes in children. Posture and balance reactions will be evaluated as well as motor planning transitions and movement on the ball. This will be a participatory workshop; comfortable clothing is suggested. Each participant is encouraged to bring an appropriate size therapy ball that will allow comfortable sitting, with hips and knees at 90 degrees. A variety of techniques that elicit muscle elongation, joint mobility, muscle strengthening, synergistic muscle activation, and overall movement control will be practiced using the balls.

LANGUAGE, PLAY AND MUSIC: An Integrated Approach to Assessment and Intervention with Young Children
Description:
Research supports the association between the development of play and the acquisition of specific language abilities in young children. Additional research has demonstrated that children’s attention and participation in varied language and play activities is enhanced by music. In this course a speech-language pathologist and an early childhood educator will collaborate to review relevant research examining play and language of children with various disabilities (including autism spectrum disorders). The use of an evidence-based framework to analyze young children’s play and promote language skills in naturalistic contexts will be presented. The instructors will highlight creative ways to use music as a vehicle for addressing play and language goals across a variety of settings. Video segments and case examples will illustrate key concepts and demonstrate practical techniques for integrating language, play, and music in an intervention program.
