Praxis: Evaluation and Treatment of the Clumsy Child
Description:
Many school-age children struggle with motor skills that their peers have long mastered. These "clumsy” children may exhibit difficulties with writing, activities of daily living, as well as issues with play and sports. This lab course will provide practical and effective intervention strategies for these children. Underlying etiologies of clumsiness (developmental incoordination disorders) as well as newer concepts of motor control and motor development will be discussed in relationship to other neurophysiologic concepts. This course will discuss evaluation tools to isolate the roots of the problem and treatment techniques and suggestions for the classroom utilizing an integrated approach. Functional outcomes and clinical effectiveness will be emphasized.

Mealtime Miseries: Management of Complex Feeding Issues
Description:
Description:
How does feeding, a process so integral to the child’s health and well-being, go awry? This course focuses on a systematic transdisciplinary (TR-eat) model integrating oral motor therapy techniques and behavioral management to treat complex feeding problems in infants and children through school age. Participants explore innovative strategies for addressing oral aversion, food refusal, poor transition onto solid foods, texture grading, learning to chew, self feeding and feeding difficulties related to autism and picky eaters via video case studies, lecture and practice. These interventions are systematic and evidence-based with research supporting outcomes. This course delivers practical, ready-to-implement solutions and hands-on techniques to empower therapists with new treatment ideas for their most complex patients.
Participants will be able to apply course learning immediately to:
- Identify variables that produce complex pediatric feeding problems.
- Address feeding problems across development states with diagnostic and innovative intervention strategies
- Demonstrate oral motor facilitation techniques and behavioral strategies simultaneously.
- Implement texture grading techniques and apply them to the process of making pureed foods
for children learning how to chew.
- Determine treatment for picky eaters, including those with autism, using behavioral interventions.
- Enhance problem-solving skills through careful analysis to determine the most effective interventions to maximize outcomes.

NDT Facilitation Course
Description:
This two day course will include lecture, lab and and treatment demonstrations. An overview of principles of NDT facilitation will be presented, facilitation techniques will be reviewed and practiced on classmates, and treatment demonstrations by the instructor will apply the use of the techniques on children with developmental delays
During each session participants will learn facilitation techniques appropriate to use with children and adolescents with cerebral palsy. Participants will practice each technique on various classmates and will have techniques practiced on them. This is primarily a LAB COURSE. Participants must wear clothes that enable movement.
Facilitation techniques will include those used for transitional movements, trunk, upper extremity, and lower extremity mobility and control. There will be a treatment demonstration with a child with cerebral palsy on Friday and Saturday afternoon to demonstrate the actual application of the techniques. The book by Lois Bly and Allison Whiteside, Facilitation Techniques Based on NDT Principles must be purchased by each participant and will be used as the text.
Objectives:
At the conclusion of this program, participants shall:
- List the major principals of NDT Facilitation Techniques
- List the major reasons why it is important to work on the trunk
- Describe the relationship between trunk and extremity movements
- Demonstrate facilitation techniques on the sagittal plane
- Demonstrate facilitation techniques on the frontal plane
- Demonstrate facilitation techniques on the transverse plane
- Describe and demonstrate techniques to increase trunk mobility and control
- Describe and demonstrate techniques to increase upper extremity mobility and control.
- Describe and demonstrate techniques to increase lower extremity mobility and control.
- Identify compensations and deviations from normal movements.
