Evaluation

Therapists at P.G. Chambers School, can conduct evaluations, using valid and reliable instruments, for individuals and schools to assist with planning services for children with disabilities. Evaluation may be a single service or included as part of PGCS contract services with a school. All therapists are knowledgeable about the special education code, including the IEP process and the role of related services. See our 2014-2015 Fee Schedule for costs

School certified therapists provide evaluations for children birth through 21 years of age. Evaluations are done for early intervention, public schools, or through private referrals.

Each child’s skills and abilities are assessed within his or her school or home environment. Evaluation methods and tools are designed to determine how the student’s disability may be preventing him or her from accessing the school curriculum and the learning environment or address specific areas of concern related to the student’s functional abilities. Evaluation helps form recommendations for therapy interventions. Comprehensive, written reports are provided summarizing the evaluation findings and recommendations.

Speech and Communication

The speech department provides evaluations and assessments for children experiencing challenges associated with:

  • Receptive and/or expressive language delay or disorder
  • Auditory processing
  • Apraxia and/or dysarthria
  • Stuttering
  • Oral-motor and feeding
  • Phonology- articulation
  • Pragmatic-social language
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

Augmentative Communication Evaluations

P. G. Chambers School offers state-of-the-art expertise in Assistive and Augmentative Communication (AAC) to the community and provides AAC evaluations for students who attend other private or public school programs. The team evaluates the student’s communication needs and assists the student’s school team in selecting the best system for the student to successfully communicate and actively participate in their school curriculum. The team often recommends a choice of systems to trial for short periods of time. The trial periods allows the student’s school team and the P.G. Chambers School AAC evaluation team to assess the child’s success with a particular AAC system before making a final recommendation. The P.G. Chambers School Augmentative Communication team also provides trainings for school teams; including AAC system vocabulary selection, programming of devices, and training the school team in using an AAC system for their student.

Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy

Occupational and physical therapists collaborate to provide evaluations and assessments for:

  • planning direct service
  • splinting and adaptations
  • designing classroom and home environments
  • fine and visual motor skills
  • visual perceptual skills
  • bilateral integration
  • postural stability
  • sensory processing and integration
  • school-related functional daily living skills
  • orthotic assessments
  • mobility equipment and seating assessments

Occupational Therapy Evaluations
New Jersey School -certified occupational therapists are available to evaluate, assess and provide consultation for children in public schools, and for private individuals.   Each student’s skills and abilities are assessed within their school environment or at P. G. Chambers School.   Assessment tools and measures are selected based on the areas of concern related to the student’s functional abilities in the school setting. The question is asked: Are the student’s difficulties preventing him/ her from accessing the curriculum and his/her learning environment? This question helps form recommendations for occupational therapy intervention. Areas of intervention may include fine and visual motor skills, visual perceptual skills, bilateral coordination, postural stability, sensory processing and integration, and school-related functional daily living skills etc. Our occupational therapists are knowledgeable about the special education code, including the IEP process, and the role of related services. After completion of the evaluation, occupational therapists are available to collaborate with the student’s child study team in the development of their IEP.
