Choosing a Child Care Program is one of the most important, and often daunting, decisions a parent makes. Here are a few things to consider, and questions you might ask, when choosing a child care program for your child.
Will my child be safe?
- Is the environment clean, safe, and oriented to children?
- Can parents visit the program at any time?
- Do teacher/child ratios meet or exceed state requirements?
- Are staff members trained in CPR and first aid?
- Is there a system for limiting access into the facility by strangers?
- Is there a strict policy about releasing children to people other than their parents/guardians?
Who will take care of my child and what will my child do all day?
- What is a typical day's schedule?
- Are there special activities and learning programs geared to the needs of children of different ages?
- Are there frequent and consistent communications between staff and parents?
- Are staff certified and experienced?
- How do the caregivers interact with the children in their care?
How will my child's health, nutritional, or special needs be met?
- Are consistent efforts made to limit illnesses from spreading?
- Are healthy snacks offered? Are parents encouraged to provide healthy foods?
- Are medications appropriately stored and administered safely?
- Are program areas and bathrooms clean and well organized?
- Are there plenty of opportunities for outdoor play on a safe and inviting playground?
How will the program promote my child's self-esteem, confidence, and independence?
- Will my family's cultural values be respected and incorporated into the curriculum?
- How will the caregiver respond to the individual needs of my child?
- Are children offered a variety of choices throughout the day?
