How Early Intervention Works in NJ

A parent or caregiver with a child under the age of 3 years and has a concern about their child’s development may contact the New Jersey toll free referral number at 888-653-4463 for more information. Once the intake is complete and the family requests an evaluation, a member of the targeted evaluation team will contact the family to make the arrangements.

To be eligible for early intervention services in New Jersey, a child must have a 33 % delay in one area or 25 % delay in two or more of the following developmental areas:

  • Physical – gross and fine motor skills
  • Cognitive – problem solving skills
  • Communication – receptive and expressive skills
  • Social – Emotional
  • Adaptive
After a child is deemed eligible for early intervention services, the Service Coordinator will arrange a meeting with the evaluation team and the family to discuss the concerns and supports needed to assist the family in achieving their outcomes for their child. The discussion takes place in the family home at which time the Individual Family Service Plan is completed. Families must be fully informed of the process and must provide written consent for any or all of the services being offered. A family has the right to decline any part of the plan that is not agreeable to them.
