Current research for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) recognizes that the earliest possible start to intervention is essential. At P.G. Chambers School, we offer center- and home-based services for children under the age of 3. These comprehensive and individualized services include behavioral therapy, speech therapy, and occupational therapy. Toddler playgroups are also available to foster play skills in a supportive environment.
Our intervention services are based on current research for children with ASD and blend a developmental approach to learning with Applied Behavioral Analysis. Utilizing the "best practices" of these approaches enables us to tailor a program to meet the needs of each individual child.
Appropriate intervention begins with an assessment of each child's developmental level that pinpoints areas of strengths and weaknesses. A program is then designed to match the child's individual needs in the areas of communication, cognitive/play, social relatedness, fine motor/sensory and self-help skills. Data is collected on a regular basis and provides objective information regarding a child's progress.
In determining our individualized program of intervention, particular attention is given to the areas of communication and social development, as these are typically areas of difficulty for a child with autism. Incorporating the strategies utilized by developmental approaches (e.g. Prizant, Hanen Centre, Greenspan), our sessions consist of both child- and adult-initiated interactions, which provide opportunity for turn-taking, choice making, joint attention, and spontaneous social communication. Motivating activities capture a child's interest and provide a positive environment for communication and social interaction.
Contemporary behavioral programs (e.g. Koegel & Koegel, Sundberg & Partington) also recognize the importance of using a more naturalistic approach in teaching language and communication in order to facilitate generalization of these skills. Our highly interactive and individualized approach incorporates a child's particular interests and motivations. Each session provides the child with opportunities to learn and practice skills that relate to everyday experiences and interactions.
We believe that family involvement is a critical component to a successful program. Families are provided with on-going training and support and are active participants in our program.
