Augmentative and Assistive Technology

Augmentative and Assistive Technology teacher & childAugmentative communication and assistive technologies improve the quality of life for persons with disabilities, providing a means for communication and independent living.  Technology can improve self-esteem, provide motivation, reduce frustration and behavior problems, increase participation in daily life, facilitate learning by making it interactive instead of passive, and change expectations of others for a child's potential.

What is Augmentative Communication and Assistive Technology?

Augmentative Communication is the use of electronic and non-electronic devices to give children and adults, with limited or no speech, a way to communicate.  Examples of augmentative devices include sign language, communication boards, Picture Exchange Communication Systems, and Voice Output Communication Aides.

Augmentative communication devices can help children with a variety of disabilities including those with physical, language and learning disabilities, as well as children diagnosed with autism or developmental delays.

Assistive Technology or Electronic Aids for Daily Living (EADL)
employs computer hardware and software in assisting persons with disabilities use computers and other devices to control their physical environment. For example, with the aid of an adapted computer, specialized switches, and modified software, a child with very limited physical abilities can turn on a light, use a CD player, or work at a computer.

Our Assistive Communication and Technology Program (ACT for Kids) provides consultation, evaluation, training and inservice programs in the areas of augmentative/alternative communication and assistive technology. The ACT Staff are highly skilled in assessing and recommending augmentative materials for more functional use within the classroom. In-class consultations make augmentative systems manageable in a variety of educational settings.
