The primary goal of Speech and Language Therapy at P.G. Chambers School is to teach children with special needs to communicate successfully using verbal speech or alternative communication systems. Our team of speech pathologists help children understand words and ideas, and express wants and needs.
Verbal Speech is Just One Way We Communicate; There are Many Others.
To talk, we need to coordinate breath and muscles to make sounds in very precise patterns. For some children this can be very difficult, so our speech pathologists might first help facilitate communication by training children to use their eyes to look at a desired toy when given a choice, to point to juice in the refrigerator, to touch a picture of the song they want the class to sing, or to sign that they are "all done," or want "more bubbles."
For children who have difficulty coordinating their muscles to chew food, or to pronounce their words clearly, we might introduce simple technology, such as augmentative communication devices with voice output, or more complex systems to help them communicate better.
Early Language Learners
Through plan and structured activities the speech pathologists help develop use of language beginning with syllables and words expanding to use of phrases and sentences
Experienced Staff Make a Difference
Our speech pathologists are all experienced working with children, and are licensed by the State of New Jersey. Each holds a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC), a national certification awarded by the American-Speech-Language-Hearing-Association.
Speech and Language Therapy Options
Speech and Language Therapy is an integral part of the School's Early Intervention and Special Education Programs, but we also provide individual and small group Speech Therapy Programs for children who attend other private and public schools in our community and just come to P.G. Chambers School for supplemental therapy.
P.G. Chambers School offers both individual and group therapy sessions depending on the child's individual needs. We also have special Speech-Language Programs, like our Social Skills Program, specifically designed for children with Pervasive Developmental Disorders, and our Assistive Communication and Technology Program (ACT), providing customized augmentative technology programs, evaluations, trainings, and workshops.
